The LA Fires

Last week, the dry winter and high winds of early January led to the worst fires in decades, with multiple fires breaking out in Los Angeles County.

Long-time Activate director and supporter Mandy Catto lives nearby. Here, she shares how her friends, family, and neighbours are affected, how her church is responding, and how we can pray

The skies have been red and smoky, ash has covered our backyard, and our hearts are heavy for our neighbours.

My friend’s sister lost her house and all her possessions.

My boss’s brother lost his house, as did all of his neighbours. Their church, school, bank, shops and parks are all turned to twisted metal and ash. It has been overwhelming to see so many acres burn and so many lives affected.

At first, I watched the news incessantly whilst texting my daughter, who lives close to the Altadena fire evacuation zone. She was reluctant to leave because of work commitments, but offices and businesses closed, and the air quality was dangerous, so a day later, she arrived at our door, 50 miles to the South, with nine friends, two cats and a dog. All of the young adults are feeling shocked and fearful. They also feel guilty that their homes are safe while others have nothing. They are grateful to be able to walk outside and breathe.

The church I work for is partnering with a local non-profit to collect much-needed supplies. More than a hundred cars drove by to drop off new clothes, blankets, baby items and snacks.

A truckload headed up to Los Angeles to support a church in the Fire Zone. Another collection is planned for the end of the week.

Conspiracy theories and blame flies around. Everyone agrees that the firefighters are working incredibly hard.

One guy from our church fought the fires for 48 hours without a break. A true hero.

Please pray for:

  • Those battling the flames and conditions
  • Those struggling to rent houses and rebuild communities
  • Churches to step in and support the suffering neighbourhoods’ material, emotional, and spiritual needs.

I have been touched by the sweet messages of support from friends in the UK and elsewhere, checking that we are okay. Thank you.
